When treating your pet, the highest possible quality of life must always be pursued. This can be done by limiting the side effects of the treatment, as well as pain or discomfort originating from tumour growth and/or the treatment itself.
Appetite stimulants can be given in case of a lack of appetite. Furthermore, the diet must always be adapted to the pet (e.g. taking into account other conditions such as kidney issues) and a complete and balanced diet offered.
The cancer itself, but also its treatment can cause (temporary) pain and may demand more than one type of pain killer. Elaborate guidelines have been drafted to manage pain correctly (AAHA/AAFP pain guidelines).
One can choose not to treat the cancer, especially when no cure is possible. Then palliative care is recommended to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
