During Positron Emission Tomography (PET) a weak radioactive sugar substance is injected intravenously. The substance binds to tumours and/or metastases (as they consume a lot of sugar). The radioactive substance emits radiation that is captured with a gamma camera that creates 3D images from the radiation. The most commonly used radioactive substance has a lifespan of maximum 2 hours.
